Well, you cannot laugh, after all whatever is happening in Syria, – and what is happening in Syria? – is certainly no laughing matter. However, when you read of Bahrain deciding to shut down its embassy in Damascus and withdrawing all diplomats and staff “because of worsening security conditions there” and advising its citizens “to be cautious and to leave the country immediately”, you cannot help but permit yourself a giggle. That’s right “leave the country immediately” and go back to Bahrain where you can get your head beaten by one of the Al-Khalifa’s hired thugs, or, indeed, get yourself shot, if you even think about fighting for those democratic rights that they are apparently fighting for in Syria.
Of course, the Al Khalufa’s are only belatedly doing what their closest ally Saudi Arabia did some seven months ago when they recalled their country’s ambassador to Damascus and demanded an end to the bloodshed in Syria. Now, wait a minute, we all want an end to the violence in Syria, but is this not the guy who sent in the troops only a year ago to put down pro-democracy demonstrations in Riyadh and Qatif, and then sent them in again to take care of a few unhappy Shia in the Eastern Province at the beginning of October last year? Oh, right it is the same guy, I thought so, but surely it cannot be the same guy who sent 1,000 troops across the King Fahad Causeway a year ago to smash in the heads of demonstrators in his Sunni mate’s own personal little fiefdom? Oh …. but it is the same guy. Is there not a tiny little bit of hypocrisy here? Well, maybe the attached picture from not so long ago will help you answer that question.
