Really the Conservative Party, with just one member of parliament in Scotland, would do itself and the United Kingdom a favour, if they just let the Scots get on with it, For, while there is no need to go into the detail of David Cameron’s speech on Scottish independence to the party faithful at Troon on friday, we can be fairly certain that the usual range pathetic pathos only alienated the Conservatives , and by implication their case for Scotland remaining in the union, even further from the Scottish people.
Moreover, while many of a few of the more gullible Scots might fall for the “standing alone against the Nazis” line, it can be fairly certain that statements like,” let’s give the Scottish people the chance to make a clear choice about their future,” will only serve to, at least initially, anger the more politically aware. Until, of course, they realise that Mr Cameron, because of who he is, what he is, and what he represents, is actually doing the independence movement a favour when he speaks on the issue. There is, of course, no need to point out that had it been the British Prime Minister’s decision to make, then there would be no referendum on independence.
However, what the Conservatives do? After all, they are there, they do have their one member of parliament, Scotland is still in the union, and, of course, the outcome of the referendum is going to very much affect them too. Therefore, yesterday there were no surprises on the Home Secretary, Theresa May, getting up and saying her tuppence worth as she warned that “an independent Scotland would be more at risk from the terrorist threat than it is as part of the United Kingdom.” Alex Salmond and friends must be rubbing their hands in glee at this nonsense. Indeed, it will not be beyond many Scots cognitive capacities to link any threat of terrorism to the fact that Britain, along with the United States and Israel, have just about pissed off the whole planet with its lack of diplomacy and warmongering.
My advice to the Scottish Nationalists? Play the “Conservative card”, because if there is one thing these people don’t know, it is just to shut up when it is expedient to do so and Conservatives successfully campaigning in Scotland. Well, that has been a non-starter for a long, long, time.
