“Yates of the Yard’s” tuppence worth at the Daily Telegraph is an absolute gem. Do you remember him, John Yates, the character who believes that “Bahrain is safer than London”, the cop who is out there sorting out the kingdom’s security problems?
Anyway, let me digress a little, before going to the article in the “Torygraph”, a slightly preferable read to the local “Pravda”, the “Gulf Daily News”, which ego remembers from his own time in Bahrain as being just about the worst rag he has ever read even after his later regular exposure to the China Daily and the Shanghai Daily ….. Yes, when it comes to crap journalism the Gulf Daily News wins hands down. However, enough of the waffle and on to John’s tuppence worth in the Daily Telegraph.
There we can read John saying that his boss, King Hamad al-Khalifa “set up a committee to push through its 26 recommendations. And last month – just over 100 days since the report – it was acknowledged by a special commission that substantial progress had been made,” and that he is “bewildered by the level of criticism aimed at a nation that has acknowledged its mistakes, but has plans in place to put things right.”
John, about half of the serving cabinet ministers of Bahrain are from King Hamad’s family, the country’s only ever Prime Minister , he has been in the job since the country gained independence from Britain in 1971, is Khalifah bin Salman al-Khalifah, Hamad’s uncle, the king’s son, the Crown Prince, owns the rights to the formula one race. The extended family form a right little mafia. “Acknowledged its mistakes“, “Wakey, wakey”, John; the kleptomaniac royals are the mistake!
How can these people have “plans in place to put things right”? Well, they could start by emptying their foreign bank accounts and returning the money to the people of Bahrain, then they could vacate their big houses and drop their royal titles. Yes, “Yates of the Yard”, a little bit slow, a veritable PC Plod.
