You really do read absurd drivel in the British mainstream press and it doesn’t become much more absurd than the self-deluded nonsense that has been spouted out by a certain Tim Lott in The Independent.
“We (the British) have surprised ourselves and our potential is unlimited” , he tells us, and then goes on to say, “we have always picked ourselves apart to find the flaws. It’s a healthy instinct, but perhaps we have for too long eschewed the equally healthy counter-instinct – to celebrate who we are.” Of course, apart from the jingoistic nonsense, silly Tim doesn’t realise that in the heart of empire identity has never quite been subject to the same analysis as it has on the continent, where there is also a common European identity. Of course, having said that, Mr Lott does have the right to argue for a quite different identity.
Nevertheless, one problems with an article like this is that the sense of exclusiveness contained in statements like “we have surprised ourselves and our potential is unlimited”, quite simply facilitates jingoistic nonsense of the worst sort at a time when ‘Blighty’s’ elites still have no issue with causing havoc all over the planet. Furthermore, when the author of the article goes on to argue that this supposedly revived British identity represents a setback for Scottish independence because English nationalists like him “feel British”, he ….. well, he doesn’t understand anything, does he? Andrew Murray and Chris Hoy might sing the British national anthem, but let’s wait for the referendum and see how the Scots vote.
Of course, they might just decide that their future lies in the union. However, if they do so, we would be doing them a disservice by suggesting that it was the 2012 Olympic Games that made them “feel British”. After all, we are talking about “games” here, and back in the world away from home our land of hope and gory is supplying “freedom fighters” with weapons, it is sending its young “no future” generation to fight its illegal wars, and it is supporting extremely distasteful regimes throughout the planet. More than enough, for the Nationalists north of the border to swing it, and when it is coupled with unemployment, the rape of the NHS, ……well, Tim, not a lot to be proud of!
