Is Jack Straw still depressed?

A good giggle is the best reaction to the news that Jack Straw was in a right old state, full of “Ängste” when he came under pressure back in 1979 from “Trotskyists and other assorted nasties” who were working against his being nominated as Labour candidate. Laugh, yes, because, Jack was worried about his “health and his future”.

A 33-year-old man worrying about his future? While ego might find that rather pathetic, Jack wouldn’t have been the first and he won’t be the last young man to worry about his future. Therefore, we might let that one go, but “worried about his health”? Yes, it appears that Jack knew he had emotional problems, but is anyone really surprised that he spent time on the couch having his id, ego, and, most definitely in his case, super ego, subjected to analysis? No, it would be more surprising if this particular “revelation”, didn’t lead us to want to throttle the neck of the irresponsible doctor who set about “repairing” Jack’s psyche? Therefore, the message to “I was depressed Jack”.

You shouldn’t be too concerned by the fact that you suffered from depressions but rather a trifle concerned that you are not suffering all the more so today. After all, ego, repaired, “nasty Trotskyists” out-of-the-way, there should be lots and lots more demons floating around in your sub-conscience, due to your share of the responsibility for  torture and illegal renditionsillegal wars and thousands of dead men, women, and children.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that those demons are coming back to haunt you and the line you appear to be taking in your memoirs really does suggest that you actually think that you sorted out your problems with the help of a shrink. However, the more sane among us are inclined to think …. if only the Trotskyists and other assorted nasties” had won the day and if only, you had decided that your future was not in politics? Yes, the “show” would have gone on without you, but that is not the point. You, made your choices and if you were a wee bit depressed back in 1979, you really should be falling into a big black hole now. Still, who knows, maybe you are, and really, who cares?

There are a lot of poor bastards out there being used and abused; it is just not cricket "old bean". Something tells me that ignorance is not bliss, but is, in fact, simply ignorance and in the global village we cannot look the other way.
