The 2012 Nobel peace prize has been awarded to the EU with the committee “praising the EU’s decades-long historical role in promoting reconciliation and peace.” Of course, there can be no doubt that the French-German rapprochement, which has its roots in the European Coal and Steel Community established by the Treaty of Paris in 1951, has helped to ensure that there will be no wars between the nations of Europe.
However, giving the EU a peace prize is absurd, albeit it no more absurd than giving it to Obama, Mohamed El Baradei, who never quite managed to get to Dimona, Kofi Annan, after his hopeless failure to stop the illegal attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq, Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, after they created the basis for the further ethnic cleansing of Palestine, Elie Wiesel, for what, Mohamed Anwar al-Sadat and Menachem Begin and, even the criminal Henry Kissinger is on the list. The prize is, of course, a joke.
Moreover, unless the writer of this post is mistaken, are most of the countries in the EU not NATO members and is NATO not at this very moment helping to facilitate the butchering in Syria, has NATO not been involved in countless of illegal wars from Afghanistan to the former Yugoslavia? Did we not see the European Council President Van Rompuy cheerleading for war in Libya?
Furthermore, did the United Kingdom not become a member of the European Economic Community in 1973 and was it not subsequently a signatory of the Maastricht Treaty, which established the European Union in 1993? Is Britain’s “historical role in promoting reconciliation and peace” also being recognised? This prize is not to be taken at all seriously. Of course, how could it be otherwise, and it might be worth reminding ourselves who the founder of the prize was. Well his name was Alfred Nobel and, in case you didn’t know it, he was manufactured armaments and invented dynamite.
