There is no reason to doubt Craig Murray’s claim that Hillary Clinton, called for direct negotiation “Between Jerusalem and Ramallah” and not Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, before the Palestinians went to the United Nations to be recognised as a non-member state.
Of course, if Washington is blind to international law and to the fact that East Jerusalem is illegally occupied, then the contention that the Palestinians are in the process of being confronted with the final stage of their ethnic cleansing has very real substance. At the very least it tells Israel that Washington will provide no obstacles as it moves towards completing the job which Ben Gurion, the first Israeli Prime Minister, didn’t quite manage to complete back in 1948.
This being so there should be no surprise at the “more of the same” drivel being spouted out by Netanyahu while giving the green light to the illegal accelerated building of illegal settlements in the illegally occupied territories. Drivel where Bibi maintains that the Palestinians should negotiate without preconditions, while arguing that all key issues in dispute, including the settlements, could be discussed in the negotiations. No surprise, perhaps, but is there nobody to tell him that the settlements are not a subject for negotiation and that they are quite simply illegal?
It really is a bit like a thief stealing your property and then trying to get you to agree to let him keep the bulk of it, if he returns a couple of the less desirable items. What a farce!
