Greece’s “No” offers all of Europe an opportunity

Just a quick word on the Greek “oxi”, which has just come through. Merkel has already phoned Hollande and she is expected in Paris tomorrow, although I am not quite sure what they will be talking about as they have already agreed that a euro zone leaders’ summit should be held on Tuesday.

However,we should not be misled into believing that this is about money per se. The structural reforms are just another way of saying that the Greeks have to accept austerity in the same way as the rest of Europe has to. Namely, in the form of a dictat. Yes,Europe’s leaders will be a trifled worried on Tuesday and certainly more worried than they would be if this was just about paying back a debt that can never be paid back.

A signal was set in Scotland with the SNP’s rout of Labour in the recent British elections and elsewhere in Europe political movements, such as Spain’s Podemos, are beginning to offer hope. Nevertheless, it is Greece’s “no” to austerity which offers a real opportunity for a democratic and social Europe.

There are a lot of poor bastards out there being used and abused; it is just not cricket "old bean". Something tells me that ignorance is not bliss, but is, in fact, simply ignorance and in the global village we cannot look the other way.
