Some crazy stuff is going down with Colin Powell’s “fucking crazies” having a heyday. Chaos reigns in the Middle East; Syria is coming apart at the seams, Libya too is disintegrating, Iraq is up shit creek, Palestine is in the process of completely disappearing off the map, and the Wahabi wallies are bombing men, women and children in Yemen, while back in the good old US of A, Donald Trump, an uncouth, unsophisticated lout, is cutting a dash on his equally uncouth, unsophisticated followers, in a race to the White House against, in all probability, Hillary “Zionist” Clinton.
Still, thank goodness for Hollywood. “Olympus has fallen” is running on the television and it has got it all. Terrorists take over the White House, but they haven’t reckoned with Mike Banning, a sort of John Wayne reincarnation, superhero, super agent, and we might wonder, if this is how Mr Trump sees himself, is this how his fans see him? Still, nice for the rest of us that Morgan Freedman alias Alan Trumbrull, who is standing in for the president while he is being held captive, is part of a government that remains “functional”. Quite scary to think that a”functional government” could actually be dependent on clowns like Hillary and Donald.
However, the whole film really does beggar belief. There is the brave Madame Secretary still refusing to give the terrorists a code when they are torturing her and, while we will probably never know, you couldn’t help thinking that you would only have to threaten Hillary with a slap on the face and she would give you everything you want. Then we have the equally as brave, or even braver, Mr President and it might be worthwhile having a look at this account of George W Bush’s “movements and actions on 9/11”, and, do you really think that in a seemingly hopeless situation Mr “ego” Trump would not put saving his skin as his first priority?
Then, of course, we have the real shit at the end. They have been attacked in their homes and their “way of life” has been attacked. The inversion of reality is complete and not too far away, here, there, and everywhere, people’s homes are being attacked and their lives are being destroyed, but hey, there is Hollywood and that’s much better than reality. After all, in the real world where genuinely brave people do defend themselves against hopeless odds, where there is no place for hypocrisy, and where there are no John Wayne’s turning up with the 7th Calvary to save the day, happy endings are few and far between.
Moreover, even if the real world appears to offer some solace from time to time, for instance, it is very unlikely that the Republican Party will allow Trump to get the nomination, this is not about the front man. Kasich, Ryan, Cruz, Rubio, Clinton, and, yes, Sanders, it matters not, the show will go on and Hollywood will help ensure it does.
