It would appear that Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, who murdered at least 84 people, including a number of children in Nice earlier today, was a petty criminal, who had no obvious links to any terror group.
People in the area where he lived have described him as not being religious and have stated that he didn’t attend a mosque and with François Molins, the Paris prosecutor leading the investigation, also pointing out that he was “totally unknown to intelligence services … and was never flagged for signs of radicalization” the evidence would indeed appear to suggest that this latest slaughter of innocent people in France is the work of someone with real mental health issues. This would appear to be substantiated by the father of three , who had recently become estranged from his wife and had become depressed, being described by his nneighbours as being a “very weird loner”.
Nevertheless, with the French president, François Hollande, extending the state of emergency in the country by three months while saying that “the whole of France is facing the threat of Islamist terrorism,” it will be interesting to see if this is the narrative that the French government is going to go with tomorrow morning.
Interesting to see, perhaps, but one suspects that come tomorrow the neighbours’ observations and the fact that the locals never saw him going to the mosque, will be all but forgotten by most of the media. Indeed, it might even be that contrary to the investigation’s conclusions today, there will be a very different conclusion tomorrow.
Yes, with news of the coup in Turkey coming in, the no news newspapers will be busy and for everyone in my part of the world who wants to chew the cud instead of counting sheep they might want to have a little read at this article on the Gulen movement, who might be behind the events in Turkey, before going to their beds.
